Broadfoot, Neil - 'Falling Fast'
Paperback: 272 pages (May 2014) Publisher: Saraband ISBN: 1908643536

This book is truly magnificent! It is the debut novel for the very talented Scottish author Neil Broadfoot and you are going to love it! It was shortlisted for the Deanston Scottish Crime Book of the Year Award 2014 and if you haven't read it yet then you really should. Broadfoot, who worked as a journalist for 15 years and is now a communications officer for the Scottish Government, is clearly another talent to keep a very close eye on.

Doug McGregor is a journalist and always on the look out for an interesting story. DS Susie Drummond is Doug's friend and an ever-useful source of information. Doug has been trying to track down the whereabouts of his long-term obsession; a convicted rapist, who has been released but has gone to ground. Unfortunately, the trail seems to have gone cold but then a nasty suicide - a jumper from the top of Edinburgh's Scott Monument - gets his full attention instead. Susie and Doug together manage to dig up some interesting information about the victim, and her father, a Tory politician. They piece together a very interesting story involving drugs and blackmail and suddenly it looks as if it may not be suicide after all. Don't get too comfortable about this story, though. It is far from predictable and has a twist at the end that will leaving you gasping in disbelief.

As you may know, I like fiction that tells a dark tale and messes with my head. FALLING FAST well and truly fits the bill and this author has been added to my favourites list. He has changed forever the way I look at the Scott Monument in Princes Street Gardens and I am looking forward to seeing what he produces next!

Extremely highly recommended.
